Even after she grew up to become Mrs. James Ward Thorne, her passion for dollhouses and the miniature objects that decorated them remained.

Thorne spent eight years (1932-1940) commissioning and overseeing the construction of close to 100 miniature interiors, which are now collectively known as The Thorne Rooms.

These elaborately and authentically reproduced rooms depict European, American and Asian interior styles from the 13th century through the 1930s.

"Her hope was that perfectly proportioned rooms in miniature could substitute for costly and space-consuming full-scale period rooms that museums across the country were beginning to acquire" (source: www.artic.edu).
