Gone but not forgotten Rogers' summer house is remembered

FAIRHAVEN — The grand summer house into which Henry Huttleston Rogers poured so much love and attention was considered a "White Elephant," by his children after he died.
"They didn't want to live in it and offered it to the town for $1," Carolyn Longworth, director of the Millicent Library, said at the opening of an exhibit on the summer house on Friday, April 13.
The town, which had about 6,200 residents in 1915, didn't take up the offer to buy the sprawling mansion for $1.
Fairhaven officials didn't know what to do with it, Ms. Longworth said.
Among the ideas floating around was to run it as a "summer hotel," but when that didn't have broad appeal, the town rejected the offer and the Rogers summer mansion was demolished.
It isn't the first time town fathers have been accused of being short sighted in not preserving historic buildings and undoubtedly won't be the last time either.
